The Nebraska Department of Energy & Environment (NDEE) has digitized its waste tire hauling permitting process to improve efficiency. Until recently, NDEE required waste tire haulers to obtain permits by submitting paper applications by mail. NDEE Waste Team Engineers spent 70-80 hours annually managing and reviewing permit applications, which were frequently incomplete, requiring rework from the applicant.
The new process employs an online system for application submission and review that replicates the paper process as much as possible. Applicants can now submit their applications in 15-20 minutes, and the online system helps ensure they are submitting all the necessary information. NDEE is able to review submissions immediately and store applications as a permanent record automatically. Whereas the review process previously took a week or more, NDEE is now able to notify applicants in just a day or two.
